Kala Vatana Usal is a special and delicious dish prepared in Konkan region of Maharashtra. Kala vatana usal is a lentil dish. Black peas are cooked in a onion, tomatoes along with spices. It can be eaten with chapati or plain rice Kala vatana is a good source of minerals, two B-vitamins, and protein--all with virtually no fat.
First, boil and cook 1/4th cup of kala vatana or black gram.
Then in a pan, heat 2 tsp oil.
Add 1/8th tsp mustard seeds, 1/2 tsp jeera and add 5 leaves of kadi patta to the crackling oil.
Add 2 tsp ginger garlic paste, 2.5 tbsp of chopped onion and 2.5 tbsp of chopped tomatoes.
Saute the ingredients well.
Next, add 1/4th tsp haldi, 1/2 tsp each of jeera and dhania powder, 1/4th tsp garam masala powder and 1/4th tsp red chilli powder.
Mix well and add a little water.
Add the cooked kala vatana.
Add 1/8th tsp salt and saute well.
Finally, garnish with 1 tsp chopped coriander leaves.
