Cooked fruits and vegetables
There are some fruits and vegetables that should be pureed only after they are being cooked. The preparation and cooking times vary according to the kind of fruits and vegetables being prepared.
- Fruits should be cooked before giving to babies including apples, apricots, dates, peaches, pears, plums, rhubarb, and nectarines.
- Vegetables that should be cooked before giving to babies include beans, carrots, cauliflower, broccoli, peas, squash, potato, sweet potato, parsnip, turnip, pumpkin, spinach, zucchini, and mushrooms.
How to puree vegetables
- Wash and peel vegetables and then cut them into small pieces.
- Place them in a saucepan; add water till the vegetables gets covered.
- Bring to a boil on high flame and simmer until they are soft.
- Drain water and keep it to use in some other food preparation.
- For young babies, blend them in a blender or mash them through a sieve. You can use the leftover water to adjust consistency.
- For older babies, mash them with the help of a fork and adjust the consistency with leftover water.
- You can also deep freeze this puree and use it later.
- You can put it into ice trays and freeze and keep giving to the child as and when required.
- While deep freezing, just discard any unbeaten portion as it is not good for freezing.
How to make fruit puree
You can prepare the fruit puree of various fruits including apples, apricots, dates, peaches, pears, plums, rhubarb, and nectarines. Rest of the process is the same as we did for vegetables. We all know how nutritious apple puree is for babies.
How to make fruit puree without cooking
There are some of the fruits that can be pureed without cooking them like avocados, banana, melon, figs, mangoes, strawberries, tomatoes, blueberries, and raspberries.
- First, wash them properly and peel them. Remove all the seeds.
- For young babies, blend with the help of a blender or pass through a sieve.
- For older babies, simply mash it with the help of a fork. You can also add some boiled cooled water for a smoother consistency.
- Not all fruits that are uncooked can be frozen, but they can be refrigerated for up to 1 day.
